What 'validity' really means and when you need a new federal check
If you have already obtained an Australian Federal Police Check, you might be wondering how long you can keep using it. The answer is not always straightforward, because while AFP Checks do not technically expire, they are rarely accepted indefinitely.
Understanding how validity works can help you avoid delays, rejected applications or being asked to resubmit paperwork at the last minute.
Do AFP Checks expire?
AFP Checks do not have an official expiry date.
When the Australian Federal Police issue a police check, it represents a point-in-time record of a person's criminal history. The certificate shows any disclosable court outcomes or pending charges that existed up to the date of issue.
For this reason, the check remains accurate for that specific point in time. It does not become invalid or incorrect simply because time has passed.
Why organisations still set time limits
Although the AFP does not impose an expiry date, organisations requesting an AFP Check usually require it to be recent.
This is because a police check does not capture anything that may have occurred after it was issued. From an employer's or government department's perspective, an older certificate provides less certainty about a person's current circumstances.
As a result, most organisations set their own rules around how old a police check can be. These rules are typically driven by:
- Risk management requirements
- Industry or regulatory obligations
- Internal compliance policies
The AFP issues the check, but the requesting organisation determines acceptance.
Common validity questions
Many organisations (particularly for visa and immigration applications) commonly require your AFP Check to have been issued within the last 3 months. This helps ensure the information reflects a person's most current criminal history at the time of assessment.
This timeframe is also frequently required for employment roles involving higher levels of trust, access or responsibility, where up-to-date screening is essential.
Other reasons your check may not be accepted
Even if your AFP Check is recent enough, it may still not meet the requirements of the requesting organisation.
You may need to apply for a new AFP Check if:
- Your existing check was issued for a different purpose
- You are required to provide a check that has been issued within a specific timeframe
- You are applying for a role or clearance with stricter compliance or security requirements
Your certificate may be accurate and relatively recent, but it must still align with the specific criteria set by the organisation requesting the AFP Check.
What to keep in mind
An AFP Police Check reflects a person's criminal history only up to the date it was issued.
Whether it can still be used depends entirely on:
- Who is requesting it
- Why it is required
- How recent they require the information to be
Before applying again, it is best to confirm the requirements with the organisation requesting the check. If you are unsure, applying for a new check is often the simplest way to avoid delays or rejected applications.
